This is a female
heroine mask made by a master mask maker in Oruro, Bolivia, the folklore
capital of the Altiplano. It’s not made for the tourist trade, it’s the real
thing - an authentic mask like those used at the Oruro Carnival. Two dragons
crouch on her brow - their tails forming her horns. China Supay’s bright blue
eyes are traditional in such masks - a not-so-subtle way the dark-eyed
Indians had of showing their disdain for their European conquerors.
